Finding the right Tempo for you with TempoStik+ A Guide by Phil Kenyon

Finding the right Tempo for you with TempoStik+

Your tempo plays a crucial role in your putting performance, and with TempoStik+, you can tailor it to suit your individual style.

Getting Started with TempoStik+
When you first open the TempoStik+ app, you’ll notice the default settings on the left-hand side, DSwing Tempo and BSwing Rhythm. The default distance is set to 10 feet, and the stimp (the speed of the green) is also set to 10. To begin finding your ideal tempo, I recommend starting with these default settings. You may need to adjust the stimp depending on the speed of the green youโ€™re playing on, but initially, stick to the 10-foot putt distance.

Understanding the Default Settings
The default core tempo is set to 90 BPM (beats per minute) with a rhythm ratio of 2.0 These settings represent the average tempo and rhythm ratio used by PGA Tour players. Itโ€™s one second from setup to impact with a rhythm where the backswing is twice as long as the downswing to impact. For many players, this one-second timing is close to ideal, but where they often struggle is in the balance between the backswing and downswing, either the backswing is too slow and the downswing too quick, or vice versa. Despite these variations, youโ€™ll find that youโ€™re not far off from this one-second mark.

Experimenting with Tempo
To start, run the sequence on a 10-foot putt and follow the visual cues provided by TempoStik+. Pay close attention to how the timing feels. Does the takeaway feel quicker or slower than normal? Is it something you can get used to, or does it feel off? If it feels too quick, you can adjust the core tempo while keeping the rhythm ratio at 2.0. For instance, if you want a slower tempo, drop it down to 85 BPM and try a few more putts. If it feels like it needs to be quicker, increase the BPM to 95.

Testing Your Tempo Across Different Distances
Once youโ€™ve settled on a tempo and timing that feels comfortable, start practicing at various distances. If you began with a 10-foot putt, move to 15 feet, then 20 feet, and so on. How does your chosen tempo feel at each distance? You may notice that maintaining the same tempo becomes more challenging as the putt distance increases or decreases. This is normal, but itโ€™s important to keep your tempo consistent across all distances.

Finding Your Ideal Tempo
The best tempo for you will often reveal itself during these practice sessions. Start with the default settings, then make slight adjustments either slower or quicker and practice maintaining that tempo across the different distances youโ€™ll encounter on the course. This method will help you establish a tempo that feels natural and comfortable, and more importantly, one that you can consistently maintain regardless of the putt distance.

Conclusion
Finding the right tempo is key to improving your putting performance, and with TempoStik+, you have the tools to discover and refine the tempo that works best for you.

Start with the default settings, make small adjustments as needed, and practice maintaining your ideal tempo across various distances. By doing so, youโ€™ll develop a consistent and reliable putting stroke that can make a significant difference in your game.
