One of the biggest learning experiences for me in my coaching career has been being around high performing athletes. You learn a lot being immersed in such environments.
It’s been interesting for me to see how the best go about their business, what they demand and how they apply themselves. It’s definitely shaped what I do and what I demand from my students. So what can we learn from the cream of the crop that we can apply ourselves to our own putting. Here are 5 principles you need to adopt when looking to improve your own golf game.
1. They have a plan. Through work with their coach, they have an idea of their tendencies and patterns and have a plan in place to manage them and work towards a better form of themselves. The plan is based around their needs. It’s unique to them.
2. They practice with purpose. Most of the top pros use training aids of some description to help give them feedback when they putt. Putting has small margins and, getting feedback is important to learning and the training aids help provide that feedback and stimulus when used correctly. They also don’t only focus on technique in practice, they embrace and develop the other skills required. Speed control, green reading and mental performance.
3. They enjoy the process of getting better. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it’s hard to do it as well. Fall in love with the process of getting better. It’s a mindset.
4. They are relentless in their pursuit of getting better. If you can enjoy it, its easier to be relentless. Don’t leave any stone unturned in the process of improvement. The 1%s add up over time and turn into leaps and bounds in performance. Keep working! The work gathers momentum over time until it’s unstoppable.
5. Attention to detail. The best I’ve been around are on point with their attention to detail. It probably comes with being relentless and having the drive of getting better. You narrow it down to the details. The details are those 1%s. You know the 1%s that add up over time to create unstoppable momentum. Attention to detail requires an understanding of the task at hand and a narrow and intense focus. The best bring intensity into everything that they do.
