I guarantee you have read this somewhere, been told this by your friends or had this tip offered to you at some point. It’s the cause of an epidemic of poor speed control I see across golfers.
“Low and slow”. Yep. “The putter needs to travel (on the backswing) low and slow”
Nope…….I’m afraid I can confirm that’s a myth.
Often this is accompanied by the further “untruth” that you need to accelerate through impact.
Such concepts hurt speed control. Some of the best putters I see actually have a slight deceleration at impact. Minimal acceleration means small changes in speed around impact. Small changes in speed means a greater chance of being able to deliver your intended speed at impact.
It’s one of the reasons I spent over 10 years developing the Visio Tempostik training aid with my good friend Dean McConnell. There are so many poor concepts banded about with regard to speed control that I wanted to put the record straight. I believe we have developed the most advanced way of training rhythm timing and acceleration in putting yet.
But don’t take my word for it, try it out for yourself. Before you do that though, check out this video where I talk more about the biggest myth I hear in golf.
