If You Only Had One Putting Drill

Controlling the starting direction of your putts is crucial for success on the greens. To develop this skill, all you need is a few balls and two tee pegs.

Read on to learn how to dial in your start line…

Straight Putts
Start with a straight 10-foot putt, place the two tee-pegs 11 inches along the putt and measure from the back of the ball, making sure the tee-pegs are 5cm wide apart, this offers a precise target to roll the ball through. This drill not only enhances your ability to start the ball on line accurately but will also give you feedback on 0.75 degrees of error or less in the putter face angle at impact.

Focus on executing a smooth and controlled stroke, ensuring that the ball passes through the gate without touching the tee pegs. This drill will not only improve your accuracy in starting the ball on the intended line but also give you feedback on any start line bias that you have. The drill will help you develop a consistent stroke and face control that will help to reduce face angle errors, leading to a more precise start line.

Breaking Putts
To incorporate breaking putts into the gate drill, again choose a putt length of 10ft, decide on your read and place another tee-peg hole high for your aim point. Place tee pegs 5cm wide 11 inches along the intended start line of the putt.

The gate now is accounting for the anticipated break. Align yourself with the target, visualising the ball’s trajectory along the break. Focus on executing a controlled stroke, aiming to roll the ball through the gate while accounting for the break. Again, hitting 10 putts will improve your green reading skills, allowing you to judge the correct speed for breaking putts and get feedback on your ability to start the ball on line.

Summary
The gate drill with tee pegs is a valuable training tool for any golfer aiming to enhance their putting accuracy and consistency. By diligently practicing both straight putts and breaking putts, you can refine your stroke mechanics, improve your alignment, and develop a keen sense of distance control. Incorporate this drill into your practice routine and witness the transformation in your putting game on the golf course.

Do the Lines on Your Putter Help or Hurt Your Game? ⛳

Do the alignment lines on your putter enhance your accuracy, or could they be hindering your performance?

Most golfers use the lines on their putters to aim the face precisely along their chosen start line. This is especially common if you also use a line on your golf ball to assist with aiming. But have you ever considered whether these lines are actually benefiting you?

Could drawing a line on your ball be the easiest way to hole more putts?

ou step up, address the ball with your putter, and make a smooth stroke, only to watch the ball veer off line like it had a mind of its own. You swear you aimed it right. But did you? For most golfers, the issue isn’t the stroke. It’s misalignment, starting the ball in the wrong direction from the very beginning.

How to read greens like a pro

Do you ever stand over a putt and second guess your read, only to watch the ball miss wide, breaking too much or not enough? You’re not alone. And there’s a chance, the problem isn’t your stroke, it’s the read.

Putting is often lost before the ball even moves. distance, slope (angle & gradient), grain and other factors can all influence how the ball rolls. If you misread those pieces of information, even a good stroke can send the putt off line.
